Are you obsessing over your post-view numbers? 📈
It’s so easy to get sucked into the metrics side of writing posts and articles and spend what feels like hours staring at the post-view numbers, hoping they tick up.
But that’s ultimately wasted time — sometimes posts don’t find traction until months or even years after you hit publish. Believe me, I’ve experienced both sides of this.
And yes, it can be immensely frustrating.
But it’s way too easy to fall into the pattern of checking post-view numbers almost obsessively throughout the day.
I get it — after all, you put a lot of work into that post and you wanna see if it performed well.
And yeah, big numbers are a great ego boost and they *do* mean you’re onto something.
But not in the way that you might think. 🤔
In a very real sense, post-view numbers are vanity metrics.
They’re highly dependent on the algorithm — which itself is a black box. In fact, sometimes the algorithm you think you’ve “got a handle on” changes and all the “rules” you put into developing your strategy might be obsolete.
Sometimes you go viral for reasons you can’t figure out.
☝️ But what you *should* be obsessing over is what those numbers — *any* numbers, really — represent:
That your content is connecting with someone. 🔥
And whether or not it keeps people engaged & coming back.
It’s not how many views you have. It’s whether people — *the right* people — are commenting and sharing. 🙌
And what they’re gleaning from your material.
Write material that intrigues the people from whom you wanna learn — and with whom you wanna collaborate. ✅
Getting lost in the numbers of trying to appeal to everyone means not knowing how to appeal directly to anyone.
Moving away from a numbers-focus is how you begin to build the dialogues which turn into amazing relationships & networks.
